    Thanks for the pickup.

Although blutooth would be awesome, I doubt it would happen just because by itself its a battery sucker compared to its competitors. Also, bluetooth requires you to manually link up two devices and ‘pair’ them, which would take too much effort IMO.

Youre right about the radio stations having to pay the fees though, I hadn’t thought of that, but put truly in perspective, its not so much an analogy of a radio station broadcasting out for people to pick up on as I think its more like someone with a radio tuned into a station is playing the music out loud to be heard.

True, I hadn’t even put Bluetooth pairing into the equation.

And, although my ASCAP/BMI fee statement is probably quite far fetched now that I look at it, it’s still some way for the RIAA to put a bite on the idea of music sharing in this manner.

Here’s one other idea (although still not the most feasible)... what if the iPods had FM transceivers in them, and you received an audiovisual alert when another iPod was broadcasting within your vicinity. You’d receive the frequency on which the stream was being broadcast coupled with track/station info.

I thought of that, but with fm, you still have the power issues, plus you would have to find a large band of fm stations that were not occupied. And that would be pretty hard to find except in rural areas, where this probably wouldn’t catch on much anyway. Otherwise if two people in the same area were broadcasting it would either overwrite each other or at least leak through. Increase the number of users and it would get even worse. I would think 802.11 b/g would be the best option for that.

And yeah, the RIAA would definately be interested in freaking out about it, but I think something could be worked out. Again, if the person could just listen in, not save the song, there really shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
