Roland Young is a faculty member of the ArtCenter College Of Design in Pasadena, CA. One of his students has been sneaking in a camera and making a secret (although not so secret anymore) documentary about Prof. Young’s critiques, all of which can be seen on the site Roland is G

haha, nice. I didn’t expect this to get spread around as much as it did. cool though. He eventually found out from his son, so we have two cameras going now. Good times.

Hey, glad to see the comment!
I’m excited to hear that he’s cool with you continuing the project. It’s very entertaining as well as inspiring. I kind of have a “WWRD” mentality when I critique my own work now. Let us know when more footage makes it online!

haha, a friend from Art Center just sent me the Roland link. This is seriously going to spread around the Internet

I’d love to meet the guy.

These videos are bullshit. You guys don’t know what he is really like. If you had him last term, or any of the terms before, he was much more harsh, to the point of making several people break down crying. He had another person go crazy and quit college.
Again, these videos are nothing.

I had never really assumed that these videos totally encapsulated the Roland Young experience.
And honestly, like I mentioned above, had I only had someone that harsh ripping me up, the criticisms I face in my daily design work would be nothing. It’s too bad to hear that people have gone crazy or whatever, but perhaps that just means that maybe – just maybe – they weren’t made for the world of design.
There are a lot of supreme assholes in the advertising and design world. I should know, I've worked for and with quite a few of them. If there's someone out there who can teach you how to deal with that kind of bullshit in addition to teaching you how to design effectively, so much the better.

Keep in mind that I did start on week 7. Every week he gets nicer. I agree that our term has it so much easier. He did make people cry though.

Roland is a jerkoff. I’d love to kick his ass in front of his class. Why do you guys love this clown? He’s a pussy.

Your post is exactly why I love this guy. Obviously, he makes you form a passionate opinion about him, love or hate. You’ll remember him (and what he put you through) forever and ever. That’s far better than the scores of generic professors that I don’t even remember.
The only professors I gained any real knowledge from are the ones I remember. So chances are, even if you think he’s a jerkoff, you’re going to damn well remember what you learned from him.

Wrong. I’m not his student, which is lucky for him, because if that asshole talked to me that way I’d tell him to go toss off in a bowl of white rice. Fuck him.

After attending another unnamed design school before art center I was more that happy to see this teaching technique. Fuck coddling people who make bad shit, either they wake up or they sink… In my last school the graduates were underprepared and undermotivated for real life work, this way theres no getting around the harsh realitys of real work. this man is educational LSD, of the black pyramid variety… he gets in your head and turns your reality upside down, some folks havent ever been forced to think or question what they know, so for them, this experience is invaluble…

Roland is the best teacher ever and I am so lucky to know him.

I had him more than a decade ago, and he was a breath of fresh air in the sanitary academic bubble that is Art Center. He starts out to shock, but he softens up as the term goes (and as you get better). Call it boot camp for average thinkers.
Quite frankly, if people are crying in his class, then they need him even more so then toughen up and separate their work from their emotions.

I've been told that he's no longer at Art Center, but that's just a rumor I'd like to confirm.

Now I understand all this. Sometimes ticking people off is just too much of a headache.

Art Center is getting softer and easier. Art Center now lets anyone in. But Roland is the steady standard all artists should strive for.
When I had him, he appreciated you for your passion and your mind. He didn't accept mediocrity. What's wrong with that!?! Why would you expect anything less from Art Center!?!
I graduated from Art Center and he is the only teacher I still remember and his comments still inspire me today.
